The Promiscuous Plan is an experimental attempt at architectural appropriation. This architectural plan combines the Baths of Vals by Peter Zumthor, the Olympic Archery Field of Barcelona by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos and the Rhomboid house by John Hejduk, merging into a new architectural space that explores the spatial opportunities reshaped by the conflict of different architectural languages and formalism.

By definition appropriation is a form of borrowing or acquiring something for one’s own use. Culturally framed by the early 20th C. cut-up techniques of the Surrealists, appropriation has permeated many 20th + 21st C. cultural contexts, facilitating the production of new work by taking an existing image, material, or object from one context and combining it with other images (or fragments of images, materials or objects) from other contexts. Collage, photomontage, assemblage, etc. belong to the legacy of appropriation as a means for making things. Here, distant realities come together in alternative forms of representational, material and spatial potential. Architecturally, appropriation as a means of designing challenges notions of individual talent and personal sensibility—restructuring program possibilities and foregrounding questions of authorship, roles of reference and of re-contextualization of found material.
